A house for the price of a hamburger: earthquake-damaged real estate is being sold in Italy

The City Council of Salemi on the island of Sicily will put up for sale more than 30 houses for the price of a hamburger – for just one euro. The proposed houses are in need of repair – some of them were damaged as a result of the 1968 earthquake.

“All the houses belong to the city council, which speeds up the sale and reduces bureaucracy. Before the launch, we restored these areas of Salemi, upgraded infrastructure, roads, electricity networks, sewerage,”
The Sun quoted the mayor Domenico Venuti as saying.

It is also reported that buyers must pay insurance for the building in the amount of 250 euros annually – until the renovation is completed.

The city government notes that there are many restaurants and cafes in Salemi, as well as attractions – a Norman castle and several museums. These factors, according to the city council, should attract buyers.
